The documentary, “Before Juneteenth: Florida’s Emancipations,” was selected by the AfroSouth Film Festival and subsequently was awarded the best documentary award by the judges. Roni Bennett of the South Florida People of Color and Dr. Tameka Bradley Hobbs were in Charleston for the event and the awards ceremony.
This would not have been possible without the support of FAAHPN members. Thanks to each of you for agreeing to participate in this project. A special thanks goes to Dr. Natalie King-Pedroso for your guidance in this project and Brittany Flowers for her most excellent direction of the film.
We hope this award bolsters awareness and continues educating our community about Florida’s unique holiday (May 20th) and the broader story of emancipation in our state.
