The history of the transatlantic slave trade from the west coast of Africa to the Americas and the African people enslaved and free on Amelia Island’s Harrison Plantation and the free settlement of Franklintown. Renowned historian and Chief Emeritus of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and Director of Howard University Moorland Spingarn Research Center Dr. Howard Dodson will present an in depth history of the transatlantic slave trade from the west coast of Africa to the Americas. Professor of Clinical Psychology at Emory University and local historian, Dr. Eugene Emory will present a continuation of his research,”In Search of Franklin Town”, where until circa 1972, on the south end of Amelia Island, a settlement of former slaves from the Harrison plantation lived. Folklorist, Mr. George Green, a direct descendant from Franklintown and resident of American Beach will share oral history and personal stories about his life
growing up in Franklintown.
