Religion and Rights in Miami will explore the pioneering priests and reverends of Black Miami, and their impact on the community both spiritually and civically. The discussion will provide a cohesive narrative on the enormous role that religion played in the development of Miami, as well as explore how it mobilized the people of Black Miami in the fight for civil rights. The conversation will also examine Miami’s unique involvement in the fight for civil rights and how, in many ways, local pioneers started the fight earlier than other parts of the country. The panel will cover various religious profiles of significance, including S.A Sampson, John Culmer, Theodore Gibson, Edward T. Graham, and others who made contributions towards the advancement of their community. Archives Staff will speak from a historical context, on how religion has shaped policy and people, Mr. Barber and panel guests will discuss the impact of religion on a personal level–How the lessons, music, and church community also help shape and support the people.
