On Thursday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m. join Leon County Government, The Village Square and Tallahassee Museum for “Stretching Toward Freedom: A Conversation about Florida Emancipation Day.” The 6th Annual event in the “Created Equal” series will feature prominent historians marking this momentous history and considering how we continue to stretch toward freedom today. The panel will include Florida A&M University’s Dr. Larry Rivers, University of Florida’s Dr. Paul Ortiz and the founding director of John G. Riley Museum and Florida African American Heritage Preservation Network, Althemese Barnes. The conversation will be facilitated by Keith Simmons of Florida Humanities. The virtual statewide Created Equal event will also include artistic performances of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and “We Shall Overcome” by the Godby High School choir and Omega Lamplighters, with a guest appearance by Motown Performing Artist Royce Lovett.
