Born a slave in Leon County but went on to become principal of Lincoln Academy and a pillar of Tallahassee’s black community.

Abraham Lincoln Lewis
Named for a founder of the Afro American Life Insurance Company, Jacksonville, Florida January 15, 1901; the first life insurance company in Florida.

Mary McCleod Bethune
Named for the founder of Bethune Cookman College, Daytona Beach, Florida. The school was initially established as a school for Negro women, later becoming coed.
